The Claims of Christ — Direct and Indirect Assertions of Deity

THE DEITY OF CHRIST — LECTURE 7

Introduction: What Did Jesus Say About Himself?

Up to this point, we have established:

  • The Messiah is declared as God in prophecy
  • The Word is God (John 1:1)
  • The Word was made flesh (John 1:14)

Now we turn to a decisive question:

What did Jesus Himself claim?

Because ultimately:

  • It is not enough that others call Him God
  • We must examine His own words

And when we do, one thing becomes clear:

Jesus did not speak as a mere man—He spoke with divine authority and identity

I. John 8:58 — “Before Abraham Was, I AM”

“Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.”

This statement is direct and unmistakable.

A. The Contrast in Tense

  • “Abraham was” → past existence
  • “I am” → present, continuous existence

Jesus does not say:

  • “I was”

He says:

“I AM”

B. The Meaning of “I AM” (ἐγώ εἰμι)

This expression connects directly to:

Exodus 3:14 — “I AM THAT I AM”

This is the divine name revealed by God Himself

C. The Reaction of the Jews

“Then took they up stones to cast at him…” (John 8:59)

Why?

Because they understood:

  • This was not a simple statement
  • This was a claim to divine identity

II. John 10:30 — “I and My Father Are One”

“I and my Father are one.”

This statement must be understood in context.

A. The Meaning of “One”

The word “one” here is:

  • Not one person
  • But unity in essence and nature

B. The Reaction Again

“Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.” (John 10:31)

And they explain why:

“…because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.” (John 10:33)

The audience clearly understood:

Jesus was claiming to be God

III. Authority to Forgive Sins — Mark 2:5–7

“…Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.”

The scribes respond:

“Who can forgive sins but God only?”

This is a correct theological statement:

Only God can forgive sins

Yet Jesus does it.

Therefore:

He exercises divine authority

IV. Acceptance of Worship

Throughout the Gospels:

Matthew 14:33 — “they… worshipped him”

John 9:38 — “he worshipped him”

Unlike angels:

Revelation 22:8–9 — angels refuse worship

Jesus does not refuse worship

Therefore:

He accepts what belongs to God alone

V. Claims of Divine Authority

Jesus repeatedly speaks with authority that belongs only to God:

  • Authority over life and death (John 5:21)
  • Authority to judge all (John 5:22–23)
  • Authority over the Law (Matthew 5 — “But I say unto you”)

No prophet speaks this way

This is not delegated authority—it is inherent authority

VI. CENI — Establishing the Doctrine

Command (Direct Statements)

  • John 8:58 — “I AM”
  • John 10:30 — unity with the Father

Example

  • Forgives sins
  • Accepts worship

Necessary Inference

  • Only God:
    • Bears the divine name
    • Forgives sins
    • Receives worship

Jesus does all these

Therefore:

Jesus is God

VII. Apologetic — Answering Common Objections

❌ “ Jesus never said ‘I am God’ directly”

This fails because:

  • He used the divine name (“I AM”)
  • His audience understood the claim
  • Their reaction confirms the meaning

❌ “ He only meant unity in purpose”

This fails because:

  • The Jews charged Him with blasphemy
  • They did not interpret it as mere agreement

❌ “ He was misunderstood”

This fails because:

  • Jesus did not correct them
  • Instead, He affirmed His authority

VIII. Polemic — Refuting False Interpretations

❌ “ Jesus is only a teacher”

False because:

  • Teachers do not claim eternal existence

❌ “ Jesus is only a prophet”

False because:

  • Prophets say “Thus saith the LORD”
  • Jesus says “I say unto you”

❌ “ Jesus is a lesser being”

False because:

  • He bears divine identity
  • He receives divine honor

IX. The Weight of His Words

Jesus did not speak carelessly.

Every claim:

  • Was understood by His audience
  • Provoked strong reaction
  • Carried eternal implications

He was not misunderstood

He was rejected because He spoke the truth

X. Spiritual Application — Responding to Christ’s Claims

The question is no longer:

“What do others say about Jesus?”

The question is:

What will you do with what Jesus said about Himself?

Because:

  • If His claims are true → He is Lord
  • If rejected → the consequence is eternal

As He said:

“If ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.” (John 8:24)

Conclusion: The Claims That Cannot Be Ignored

Jesus Christ:

  • Declared “I AM”
  • Claimed unity with the Father
  • Forgave sins
  • Accepted worship
  • Exercised divine authority

These are not the words of a mere man

These are the claims of God revealed in the flesh

Therefore:

Jesus Christ knowingly and clearly asserted His divine identity—and the Scriptures confirm it without contradiction.

I. Juan 8:58 — “Bago Ipinanganak si Abraham, Ako Nga”

“Sinabi sa kanila ni Jesus, Katotohanan, katotohanang sinasabi ko sa inyo, Bago ipinanganak si Abraham, ay ako nga.”

Pansinin:

  • Bago ipinanganak si Abraham,” → bago ang panahon ni Abraham
  • “Ako nga” → kasalukuyang pag-iral

Hindi Niya sinabi:

  • “Ako noon”

Ang sinabi Niya:

“Ako nga” (I AM)

A. Kahulugan ng “Ako Nga” (ἐγώ εἰμι)

Ito ay direktang konektado sa:

Exodo 3:14 — “AKO NGA YAONG AKO NGA”

(Juan 8:59)

Bakit?

Dahil naintindihan nila:

Inaangkin Niya ang pagka-Dios

II. Juan 10:30 — “Ako at ang Ama ay Iisa”

“Ako at ang Ama ay iisa.”

A. Ano ang ibig sabihin ng “iisa”?

Hindi ibig sabihin:

  • iisang persona

Kundi:

iisa sa esensya at kalikasan bilang Dios

B. Reaksyon muli

“Muling nagsipamulot ng mga bato ang mga Judio…” (Juan 10:31)

At sinabi nila:

“…sapagka’t ikaw, bagaman ikaw ay tao, ay nagpapakunwaring Dios.” (Juan 10:33)

Maliwanag:

Naintindihan nila ang sinasabi ni Jesus

Para sa kanila:

Ito ay pag-aangkin ng pagka-Dios

III.

Kaya malinaw:

May kapangyarihan Siyang gaya ng Dios

IV. Pagtanggap ng Pagsamba

Sa maraming pagkakataon:

Mateo 14:33 — “…siya’y sinamba nila…”

Juan 9:38 — “…siya’y sinamba niya…”

Samantalang:

Apocalipsis 22:8–9 — tumatanggi ang anghel sa pagsamba

Si Jesus:

  • Hindi tumanggi
  • Tinanggap ang pagsamba

Kaya malinaw:

VI. CENI — Pagtatatag ng Katotohanan

Utos (Direct Statements)

  • Juan 8:58 — “Ako nga”
  • Juan 10:30 — “iisa”

Halimbawa

  • Nagpatawad ng kasalanan
  • Tumanggap ng pagsamba

Kinakailangang Konklusyon

  • Ang Dios lamang:
    • May banal na pangalan
    • Nagpapatawad ng kasalanan
    • Tumatanggap ng pagsamba

Ginawa ito ni Jesus

Kaya:

Si Jesus ay Dios

VII.

IX.

The Origin and Error of “Once Saved, Always Saved” (OSAS): A Biblical Exposé

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog The Origin and Error of “Once Saved, Always Saved” (OSAS) A Biblical Exposé An Authoritative Study Using the King James Bible Introduction: A Question of Eternal Security The doctrine of Once Saved, Always Saved (OSAS) asserts that once a person is saved, they can never lose their salvation, regardless of future behavior, apostasy, or rebellion. It is often linked with the phrase “eternal security” in Protestant theology. This study examines the origin, evaluates the biblical claims, and provides a full refutation using only the Scripture as the final and only authority. I. Historical Roots of OSAS (A Brief Context) Though many today assume OSAS to be an apostolic doctrine, its systematized form arose from John Calvin's doctrine of Perseverance of the Saints (TULIP), later popularized by Baptist theologians like Charles Stanley and modern evangelical churches. However, early church fathers such as Tertullian, Orige...

The Promise and Importance of Christ’s Church

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog     Next ⟶ The Promise and Importance of Christ’s Church "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." — Matthew 16:18 (KJV) Introduction The Church of Christ is not a product of human invention or denominational evolution. It is the fulfillment of a divine promise — a structure built not by human hands, but by the Lord Himself. In a time when religious confusion is widespread and thousands of conflicting churches exist, we must return to the simple, authoritative statement of Jesus: “I will build my church.” (Matt. 16:18) These words mark the beginning of a divine blueprint. This was not a vague intention, nor a mystical concept. Jesus was referring to a real, identifiable, and traceable body of people — the church — that He Himself would build, own, and preserve. “I Will Build My Church” — A Divine Dec...

Grace, Faith, and Works

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog Grace, Faith, And Works A Biblical Exegesis Of Ephesians 2:8–10 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” – Ephesians 2:8–10 I. Introduction: Why This Study Matters Now More Than Ever In a religious world increasingly divided by theological confusion and denominational doctrines, few passages are more quoted yet more misunderstood than Ephesians 2:8–10 : “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” While this passage declares foundational truths about salvation, it has been misappropria...

Restoration Movement: The Illusion of Rebuilding What God Preserved

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog There Is Nothing to Restore — Just Preach the Gospel A Doctrinal Exposition Affirming the Ongoing Existence and Perfection of God’s Church Introduction In recent centuries, many sincere believers have spoken of a "restoration movement"—the idea that the true church was lost to history and must now be recovered or re-established. But is this concept biblical? Does Scripture ever indicate that the church built by Christ (Matthew 16:18) would vanish, become corrupted, and need a future restoration? The answer, as revealed in the inspired Word of God, is  no . What God  planned before the foundation of the world  (Ephesians 3:9–11), what Christ  purchased with His own blood  (Acts 20:28), and what was  established in power on Pentecost  (Acts 2),  continues to exist today . While men may depart from the truth, the truth remains. And what we are called to do is not to restore, but to  pre...

The Church Built By Jesus Christ In The New testament - Lesson 1

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog ⟵ Previous Next ⟶ Lesson 1: The Church Planned by God Before the Creation of the Universe Key Passage: Ephesians 3:9–11 “ And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: ” Introduction The concept of the church is often misunderstood—even among believers. To many, it appears to be an afterthought, a temporary institution until Christ returns, or merely a human denomination among many. But the Scriptures teach otherwise. The church was not an accident. It was not a substitute for a failed plan. It was not an invention of man. It was part of God's eternal purpose , rooted i...

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog What Must I Do To Be Saved? A Doctrinal Study in Biblical Salvation THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION YOU MUST ASK — AND GOD HAS ALREADY ANSWERED IT There is no question more urgent, more eternal, and more personal than this: “What must I do to be saved?” This question is not a modern invention — it is already found in the New Testament , asked by real people in real moments of conviction, and answered by the Holy Spirit through the apostles of Jesus Christ. This means every truth-seeker today must stop looking elsewhere for answers. God has already spoken. His answer is final. His plan is clear. If the whole world knew God’s answer to this question, no one would be lost. So if what you’ve heard about salvation differs from what the Bible teaches — leave that group, that preacher, or that tradition immediately. “ If anyone preaches another gospel… let him be accursed. ” (Galatians 1:8–9) Are you ready to hear the real answer from...

“Jesus Called Us Brethren”

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog "Go and Tell My brethren" Text: “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.’” - Matthew 28:10 I. Introduction: The Significance of the Word "Brethren" After His glorious resurrection, Jesus could have referred to His disciples with any term—“servants,” “students,” or “followers.” But He chose the word “brethren.” This word carries weight. It reflects forgiveness, restored fellowship, and most importantly, a shared relationship with the Father. Why does Jesus now call His disciples brethren? What does that mean for us today? And how did we become worthy of such a name? II. Context and Background Let’s recall that before the crucifixion, His disciples deserted Him in fear (Matthew 26:56). Peter even denied Him three times. They failed Him at His darkest hour. Yet, after rising from the grave, Jesus doesn’t rebuke them—He calls them “My b...
