The Unity and Nature of God — Monotheism Without Compromise (Old Testament Foundation)

THE DEITY OF CHRIST — LECTURE 2

Introduction: The Foundation That Cannot Be Broken

Before we can establish the deity of Christ, we must first establish this unshakable truth:

There is only one God.

Any claim that Jesus is God must not contradict this truth—but must fully harmonize with it.

The Bible does not allow:

  • Multiple gods (polytheism)
  • Nor a divided God

Instead, it consistently declares from Genesis to Malachi:

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD.” (Deuteronomy 6:4)

This is the foundation. If this is misunderstood, everything that follows will collapse.

I. The Absolute Oneness of God in the Old Testament

The Old Testament repeatedly declares that God is one and only.

“I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me.” (Isaiah 45:5)

“Before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.” (Isaiah 43:10)

These are not poetic exaggerations. These are exclusive declarations:

  • No other God in the past
  • No other God in the present
  • No other God in the future

Therefore, it is clear:

Biblical monotheism is absolute truth.

II. Hebrew Analysis — “Elohim” and “YHWH”

To understand more deeply, we must examine the original words.

(Elohim)

  • Grammatical form: plural
  • Yet used for one God

Example:

Genesis 1:1 — “In the beginning God (Elohim) created…”

Observe:

  • The noun is plural
  • The verb is singular (created, not createds)

This indicates:

A plurality of expression, yet unity of being

2. יְהוָה (YHWH)

This is the personal name of God:

“I AM THAT I AM.” (Exodus 3:14)

This reveals:

  • Eternal existence
  • Self-existence
  • Unchanging nature

Therefore, the God of the Bible is:

One in essence, without equal, without beginning or end

III. The Shema — Deuteronomy 6:4 Explained

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD.”

The Hebrew word for “one” is “echad.”

This word can express:

  • Absolute unity
  • Or compound unity

Example:

  • Genesis 2:24 — “they shall be one flesh” (two persons, yet one unity)

Therefore, the point is:

God is one—but not limited to a simplistic understanding of “one”

This is not contradiction. It is:

Unity without division

IV. Plural Expressions in the Old Testament

There are passages that reveal plurality within the one God.

1. Genesis 1:26

“Let us make man in our image…”

2. Genesis 3:22

“Behold, the man is become as one of us…”

3. Genesis 11:7

“Let us go down…”

The question is:

Who is “us”?

It cannot be:

  • Angels (they are not creators)
  • Multiple gods (contradicts monotheism)

Therefore, this reveals:

Plurality within the one God

V. The Angel of the LORD — A Critical Observation

In several passages, the “Angel of the LORD” appears and:

  • Speaks as God
  • Acts as God
  • Receives honor that belongs to God

Example: Exodus 3

  • The Angel of the LORD appears
  • Yet the one speaking is identified as God

This is not contradiction. It reveals:

A manifestation of God with personal distinction, yet the same divine identity

VI. CENI — Establishing Monotheism Clearly

Command (Direct Statements)

  • Deuteronomy 6:4 — One LORD
  • Isaiah 45:5 — No other God

Example

  • Worship is consistently directed to one God alone

Necessary Inference

  • If there is only one God
  • And later Christ is called God

Then Christ must share the same divine essence—not be another God

VII. Apologetic — Guarding Against Error

There are two extremes that must be avoided:

❌ 1. Polytheism (Many gods)

  • Contradicts explicit Scripture

❌ 2. Oversimplified Unitarianism (One person only, no distinction)

  • Cannot explain:
    • “Let us” statements
    • The Angel of the LORD
    • Future revelation in the New Testament

Therefore, the correct understanding is:

One God, fully unified, yet revealed with distinction

VIII. Polemic — Refuting Misuse of Monotheism

Some use Deuteronomy 6:4 to argue:

“Jesus cannot be God because there is only one God.”

But this reasoning is flawed.

Because:

  • Scripture does not say “only one person”
  • It says one God

Therefore, if Christ is called God:

  • He is not “another God”

He shares the same divine nature

IX. Spiritual Application — Knowing the True God

It is not enough to believe that God exists.

We must:

  • Know who He is
  • Understand His nature
  • Accept His revelation

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God…” (John 17:3)

Conclusion: The Foundation for Understanding Christ

Before we fully establish the deity of Christ, this must be clear:

There is only one God

And this one God:

  • Has no equal
  • Has no rival
  • Is not divided
  • Yet reveals Himself beyond human limitation

So the next question becomes unavoidable:

If there is only one God, and Christ is called God,

How can both be true without contradiction?

This is what we will prove next.

Ang Kaisahan at Kalikasan ng Dios — Monotheism na Walang Kompromiso (Ang Pundasyon sa Lumang Tipan)

ANG PAGKA-DIYOS NI CRISTO — ARALIN 2

Panimula: Ang Pundasyong Hindi Pwedeng Mabuwag

(Isaias 43:10)

Hindi ito exaggeration. Hindi ito figure of speech. Ito ay direktang pahayag:

  • Walang ibang Dios noon
  • Walang ibang Dios ngayon
  • Walang ibang Dios kailanman

Kaya malinaw:

II.

(Elohim)

  • Anyong gramatikal: plural
  • Pero ginagamit para sa iisang Dios

Halimbawa:

Genesis 1:1 — “Nang pasimula ay nilikha ng Dios…”

Mapapansin:

  • Plural ang anyo ng salita
  • Pero singular ang kilos (nilikha)

Ibig sabihin:

2. יְהוָה (YHWH)

Ito ang pangalan ng Dios:

“AKO NGA YAONG AKO NGA.” (Exodo 3:14)

Ipinapakita nito:

  • Siya ay walang pasimula
  • Siya ay walang katapusan
  • Siya ay umiiral sa Kaniyang sarili

Kaya ang Dios ng Biblia ay:

iisa sa kalikasan, walang kapantay, walang katulad

III.

VI. CENI — Pagtatatag ng Kaisahan ng Dios

Utos (Direct Statement)

  • Deut. 6:4 — Iisang Panginoon
  • Isaias 45:5 — Walang ibang Dios

Halimbawa

VII. Apologetics — Pag-iingat sa Kamalian

Dalawang extreme ang dapat iwasan:

❌ 1. Maraming Dios (Polytheism)

  • Tahasang salungat sa Kasulatan

❌ 2. Sobrang pagpapasimple (Isang persona lang, walang distinction)

  • Hindi kayang ipaliwanag:
    • “Let us”

The Origin and Error of “Once Saved, Always Saved” (OSAS): A Biblical Exposé

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog The Origin and Error of “Once Saved, Always Saved” (OSAS) A Biblical Exposé An Authoritative Study Using the King James Bible Introduction: A Question of Eternal Security The doctrine of Once Saved, Always Saved (OSAS) asserts that once a person is saved, they can never lose their salvation, regardless of future behavior, apostasy, or rebellion. It is often linked with the phrase “eternal security” in Protestant theology. This study examines the origin, evaluates the biblical claims, and provides a full refutation using only the Scripture as the final and only authority. I. Historical Roots of OSAS (A Brief Context) Though many today assume OSAS to be an apostolic doctrine, its systematized form arose from John Calvin's doctrine of Perseverance of the Saints (TULIP), later popularized by Baptist theologians like Charles Stanley and modern evangelical churches. However, early church fathers such as Tertullian, Orige...

“Jesus Called Us Brethren”

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog "Go and Tell My brethren" Text: “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.’” - Matthew 28:10 I. Introduction: The Significance of the Word "Brethren" After His glorious resurrection, Jesus could have referred to His disciples with any term—“servants,” “students,” or “followers.” But He chose the word “brethren.” This word carries weight. It reflects forgiveness, restored fellowship, and most importantly, a shared relationship with the Father. Why does Jesus now call His disciples brethren? What does that mean for us today? And how did we become worthy of such a name? II. Context and Background Let’s recall that before the crucifixion, His disciples deserted Him in fear (Matthew 26:56). Peter even denied Him three times. They failed Him at His darkest hour. Yet, after rising from the grave, Jesus doesn’t rebuke them—He calls them “My b...

Restoration Movement: The Illusion of Rebuilding What God Preserved

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog There Is Nothing to Restore — Just Preach the Gospel A Doctrinal Exposition Affirming the Ongoing Existence and Perfection of God’s Church Introduction In recent centuries, many sincere believers have spoken of a "restoration movement"—the idea that the true church was lost to history and must now be recovered or re-established. But is this concept biblical? Does Scripture ever indicate that the church built by Christ (Matthew 16:18) would vanish, become corrupted, and need a future restoration? The answer, as revealed in the inspired Word of God, is  no . What God  planned before the foundation of the world  (Ephesians 3:9–11), what Christ  purchased with His own blood  (Acts 20:28), and what was  established in power on Pentecost  (Acts 2),  continues to exist today . While men may depart from the truth, the truth remains. And what we are called to do is not to restore, but to  pre...

The Promise and Importance of Christ’s Church

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog     Next ⟶ The Promise and Importance of Christ’s Church "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." — Matthew 16:18 (KJV) Introduction The Church of Christ is not a product of human invention or denominational evolution. It is the fulfillment of a divine promise — a structure built not by human hands, but by the Lord Himself. In a time when religious confusion is widespread and thousands of conflicting churches exist, we must return to the simple, authoritative statement of Jesus: “I will build my church.” (Matt. 16:18) These words mark the beginning of a divine blueprint. This was not a vague intention, nor a mystical concept. Jesus was referring to a real, identifiable, and traceable body of people — the church — that He Himself would build, own, and preserve. “I Will Build My Church” — A Divine Dec...

Grace, Faith, and Works

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog Grace, Faith, And Works A Biblical Exegesis Of Ephesians 2:8–10 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” – Ephesians 2:8–10 I. Introduction: Why This Study Matters Now More Than Ever In a religious world increasingly divided by theological confusion and denominational doctrines, few passages are more quoted yet more misunderstood than Ephesians 2:8–10 : “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” While this passage declares foundational truths about salvation, it has been misappropria...

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog What Must I Do To Be Saved? A Doctrinal Study in Biblical Salvation THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION YOU MUST ASK — AND GOD HAS ALREADY ANSWERED IT There is no question more urgent, more eternal, and more personal than this: “What must I do to be saved?” This question is not a modern invention — it is already found in the New Testament , asked by real people in real moments of conviction, and answered by the Holy Spirit through the apostles of Jesus Christ. This means every truth-seeker today must stop looking elsewhere for answers. God has already spoken. His answer is final. His plan is clear. If the whole world knew God’s answer to this question, no one would be lost. So if what you’ve heard about salvation differs from what the Bible teaches — leave that group, that preacher, or that tradition immediately. “ If anyone preaches another gospel… let him be accursed. ” (Galatians 1:8–9) Are you ready to hear the real answer from...

Believe That Ye Receive Them, And Ye Shall Have Them.

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog " Believe That Ye Receive Them, And Ye Shall Have Them. " Text: Mark 11:24 Introduction This Bible sermon explains the true meaning of Mark 11:24 , where Jesus teaches about believing prayer. Many misunderstand this verse as a promise that God will grant any request, but Scripture shows that prayer must be made in Christ’s name, according to His will, and from a life of obedience . Learn what the Bible really teaches about faithful prayer. Brethren and friends, listen carefully to the words of our Lord Jesus Christ in Mark 11:24 : “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” This verse is powerful. It is encouraging. It strengthens our faith in prayer. But it is also one of the most misunderstood verses in the Bible today. Many people read this passage and think that Jesus is giving believers a blank check — that whatever we desire, God ...
