The Foundational Thesis — Why the Deity of Christ Is Central to Salvation and Doctrine

THE DEITY OF CHRIST  — LECTURE 1

Introduction: The Question That Determines Everything

There is no question more critical in all of Scripture than this: Who is Jesus Christ? Not merely what men say, not what traditions teach, but what the Word of God declares. For upon this question rests the foundation of salvation, the authority of doctrine, and the very identity of God as revealed to man.

In Matthew 16:15, Jesus asked His disciples, “But whom say ye that I am?” This was not a casual inquiry—it was a dividing line between truth and error, life and condemnation. The answer given by Peter, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16), becomes the cornerstone of true faith.

Yet Scripture does not leave this confession undefined. The Bible itself explains what it means for Christ to be the Son of God—not a created being, not merely a prophet, but One who shares the very nature of God. This lecture establishes the thesis that the deity of Christ is not optional—it is essential, foundational, and inseparable from salvation itself.

I. The Biblical Thesis — The Deity of Christ Is Essential to Salvation

The clearest statement from Christ Himself is found in John 8:24:

“I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.”

The phrase “I am he” is supplied in English; in the Greek, the statement is absolute: ἐγώ εἰμι (ego eimi)“I AM.” This is not merely identification; it is a declaration rooted in divine self-revelation (cf. Exodus 3:14).

Christ is therefore not presenting belief in Himself as optional theology. He is declaring a condition of salvation:

  • Right belief about His identity is required
  • Wrong belief results in dying in sin

This immediately elevates the doctrine of Christ’s nature from secondary discussion to primary necessity.

II. Defining the Terms — What Does Scripture Mean by “God” and “Son of God”?

Before proceeding, Scripture must define its own terms.

1. “God” (Hebrew: אֱלֹהִים, Greek: θεός)

In Scripture, God is:

  • Eternal (Psalm 90:2)
  • Creator (Genesis 1:1)
  • The only true God (Isaiah 45:5)

2. “Son of God” (Biblical Meaning)

This title does not imply creation, but nature and equality.

In John 5:18:

“...he said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.”

The Jews understood clearly:

  • Calling God His Father = claim to equality with God

Thus, “Son of God” in Scripture is not lesser—it is identity of essence.

III. The Principle of Interpretation — Scripture Interprets Scripture

No doctrine in this study will be built on isolated verses or human reasoning. The governing rule is:

The Bible explains itself.

This means:

  • Difficult passages must be understood in light of clear ones
  • No interpretation may contradict the totality of Scripture
  • Silence of Scripture does not authorize speculation

As written:

“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.” (2 Peter 1:20)

Thus, the deity of Christ must be established by:

  • Direct statements
  • Consistent testimony
  • Harmonized revelation

IV. CENI Framework — Establishing Authority

The doctrine of Christ’s deity will be proven through:

1. Command (Direct Statements)

Example:

  • John 1:1 — “the Word was God”
  • Hebrews 1:8 — “Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever”

2. Approved Example

  • Worship given to Christ (Matthew 14:33)

3. Necessary Inference

  • Only God can forgive sins → Christ forgives sins → Christ is God (Mark 2:5–7)

This method ensures:

  • No assumption
  • No tradition
  • Only divine authority

V. Apologetic Foundation — Why This Doctrine Must Be Defended

If Christ is not God, then:

  1. His sacrifice is insufficient
    • A mere man cannot bear the sins of the world (Hebrews 9:14)
  2. Worship of Christ becomes idolatry
    • Yet Scripture commands it (Hebrews 1:6)
  3. Salvation collapses
    • Only God can save (Isaiah 43:11)

Therefore, denying Christ’s deity is not a minor error—it is a fatal doctrinal corruption.

VI. Polemical Necessity — Refuting Foundational Error

Throughout history and even today, several claims arise:

  • “Jesus is only a man”
  • “Jesus is a created being”
  • “Jesus is a lesser god”

These claims fail under Scripture because:

  1. They contradict explicit statements (John 1:1)
  2. They ignore contextual meaning (John 5:18)
  3. They deny divine works and worship attributed to Christ

Thus, these positions are not alternative interpretations—they are unscriptural conclusions.

VII. The Consequence of Error — A Matter of Eternal Life

Returning to John 8:24, the consequence is unmistakable:

“If ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.”

This is not theological debate—it is a warning.

  • To misunderstand Christ is to misunderstand salvation
  • To reject His identity is to reject His authority
  • To deny His deity is to remain in sin

VIII. Spiritual Application — Faith Rooted in Truth

True faith is not blind—it is grounded in revealed truth.

Therefore:

  • We must believe what Scripture says about Christ
  • We must reject human reinterpretations
  • We must align our understanding with God’s Word

As written:

“Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father.” (1 John 2:23)

Faith is not merely believing in Jesus—it is believing the truth about Jesus.

Conclusion: The Unavoidable Foundation

The Scriptures leave no room for neutrality:

  • Christ is not merely a teacher
  • He is not merely a prophet
  • He is not merely a moral example

He is the I AM, the One whose identity determines eternal destiny.

Thus, the thesis stands:

The Deity of Christ is the foundation upon which all doctrine, worship, and salvation rest. To deny it is to lose everything; to believe it is to stand in truth.

II. Ano ang Ibig Sabihin ng “Diyos” at “Anak ng Diyos”?

Hayaan nating ang Biblia mismo ang magpaliwanag.

1. “Diyos” (אֱלֹהִים / θεός)

Sa Biblia, ang Diyos ay:

  • Walang pasimula at walang katapusan (Awit 90:2)
  • Manlilikha ng lahat (Genesis 1:1)
  • Nag-iisang tunay na Diyos (Isaias 45:5)

V. Pagtatanggol (Apologetics) — Bakit Ito Dapat Ipaglaban

Kung si Cristo ay hindi Diyos:

The Origin and Error of “Once Saved, Always Saved” (OSAS): A Biblical Exposé

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog The Origin and Error of “Once Saved, Always Saved” (OSAS) A Biblical Exposé An Authoritative Study Using the King James Bible Introduction: A Question of Eternal Security The doctrine of Once Saved, Always Saved (OSAS) asserts that once a person is saved, they can never lose their salvation, regardless of future behavior, apostasy, or rebellion. It is often linked with the phrase “eternal security” in Protestant theology. This study examines the origin, evaluates the biblical claims, and provides a full refutation using only the Scripture as the final and only authority. I. Historical Roots of OSAS (A Brief Context) Though many today assume OSAS to be an apostolic doctrine, its systematized form arose from John Calvin's doctrine of Perseverance of the Saints (TULIP), later popularized by Baptist theologians like Charles Stanley and modern evangelical churches. However, early church fathers such as Tertullian, Orige...

The Promise and Importance of Christ’s Church

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog     Next ⟶ The Promise and Importance of Christ’s Church "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." — Matthew 16:18 (KJV) Introduction The Church of Christ is not a product of human invention or denominational evolution. It is the fulfillment of a divine promise — a structure built not by human hands, but by the Lord Himself. In a time when religious confusion is widespread and thousands of conflicting churches exist, we must return to the simple, authoritative statement of Jesus: “I will build my church.” (Matt. 16:18) These words mark the beginning of a divine blueprint. This was not a vague intention, nor a mystical concept. Jesus was referring to a real, identifiable, and traceable body of people — the church — that He Himself would build, own, and preserve. “I Will Build My Church” — A Divine Dec...

Grace, Faith, and Works

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog Grace, Faith, And Works A Biblical Exegesis Of Ephesians 2:8–10 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” – Ephesians 2:8–10 I. Introduction: Why This Study Matters Now More Than Ever In a religious world increasingly divided by theological confusion and denominational doctrines, few passages are more quoted yet more misunderstood than Ephesians 2:8–10 : “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” While this passage declares foundational truths about salvation, it has been misappropria...

Restoration Movement: The Illusion of Rebuilding What God Preserved

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog There Is Nothing to Restore — Just Preach the Gospel A Doctrinal Exposition Affirming the Ongoing Existence and Perfection of God’s Church Introduction In recent centuries, many sincere believers have spoken of a "restoration movement"—the idea that the true church was lost to history and must now be recovered or re-established. But is this concept biblical? Does Scripture ever indicate that the church built by Christ (Matthew 16:18) would vanish, become corrupted, and need a future restoration? The answer, as revealed in the inspired Word of God, is  no . What God  planned before the foundation of the world  (Ephesians 3:9–11), what Christ  purchased with His own blood  (Acts 20:28), and what was  established in power on Pentecost  (Acts 2),  continues to exist today . While men may depart from the truth, the truth remains. And what we are called to do is not to restore, but to  pre...

The Church Built By Jesus Christ In The New testament - Lesson 1

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog ⟵ Previous Next ⟶ Lesson 1: The Church Planned by God Before the Creation of the Universe Key Passage: Ephesians 3:9–11 “ And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: ” Introduction The concept of the church is often misunderstood—even among believers. To many, it appears to be an afterthought, a temporary institution until Christ returns, or merely a human denomination among many. But the Scriptures teach otherwise. The church was not an accident. It was not a substitute for a failed plan. It was not an invention of man. It was part of God's eternal purpose , rooted i...

“Jesus Called Us Brethren”

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog "Go and Tell My brethren" Text: “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.’” - Matthew 28:10 I. Introduction: The Significance of the Word "Brethren" After His glorious resurrection, Jesus could have referred to His disciples with any term—“servants,” “students,” or “followers.” But He chose the word “brethren.” This word carries weight. It reflects forgiveness, restored fellowship, and most importantly, a shared relationship with the Father. Why does Jesus now call His disciples brethren? What does that mean for us today? And how did we become worthy of such a name? II. Context and Background Let’s recall that before the crucifixion, His disciples deserted Him in fear (Matthew 26:56). Peter even denied Him three times. They failed Him at His darkest hour. Yet, after rising from the grave, Jesus doesn’t rebuke them—He calls them “My b...
