Lesson 3: Entrance to the Church

Key Passages: Acts 2:47; 1 Corinthians 12:13

Acts 2:47 — “Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”

1 Corinthians 12:13 — “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.”

Introduction

In a world where church membership often means joining a group by signing a form or attending a service, the biblical truth about how one enters the church is often misunderstood—or ignored altogether. The New Testament teaches that no man joins the church—rather, the Lord adds the saved to it. This lesson explores the divine sequence of salvation and how it results in entrance into the one body, the church of Christ.

Historical Context

The events of Acts 2 took place on the day of Pentecost, shortly after Jesus’ ascension (Acts 1:9). Jews from “every nation under heaven” (Acts 2:5) were gathered in Jerusalem. After the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, Peter preached the first full Gospel sermon, convicting the people of having crucified the Son of God.

In response to the heart-piercing sermon, the people asked, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37). Peter gave Heaven’s answer: Repent and be baptized (Acts 2:38). About three thousand obeyed that day (Acts 2:41)—and the Lord added them to the church (Acts 2:47). There was no denomination to join. No membership vote. Only God's response to obedience.

Biblical Context

The Scriptures consistently reveal the process of salvation and how it places one into Christ and His church:

The Plan of Salvation (Heaven’s Sequence):

  1. Hearing the Word — Romans 10:17
  2. Believing in Christ — John 8:24
  3. Repentance of sins — Acts 2:38
  4. Confession of Christ — Romans 10:9–10
  5. Baptism for the remission of sins — Acts 2:38; Mark 16:16
  6. Faithful living — Revelation 2:10

This plan is not human tradition—it is the New Testament pattern, and it culminates in being added by the Lord to His church.

Salvation and the Body (the Church):

  • Ephesians 1:22–23 — The church is the body.
  • Colossians 1:18 — Christ is the head of the body, the church.
  • 1 Corinthians 12:13 — All are baptized into one body.
  • Ephesians 5:23 — “even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.”

Thus, to be saved is to be in Christ, and to be in Christ is to be in His body, which is the church.

Greek Exegesis: "added" (Acts 2:47)

Greek: ฯ€ฯฮฟฯƒฮตฯ„ฮฏฮธฮตฮน (prosetithei) — imperfect active indicative of ฯ€ฯฮฟฯƒฯ„ฮฏฮธฮทฮผฮน

  • Means: to add, to place alongside, to join to something already existing.
  • Imperfect tense implies continuous action — “was adding daily…”

Commentary:
It is God who adds, not man who joins. And He adds only those who are saved through obedience to the Gospel. The church is not a social club, it is the spiritual body of the redeemed.

Full Scripture Cross-Referencing

  1. Galatians 3:27 — “For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”
  2. Romans 6:3–4 — Baptism is the point of burial into Christ's death.
  3. Titus 3:5 — “According to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration…”
  4. Colossians 2:12 — “Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God,…”

Doctrinal Note:

Baptism is the moment of entrance—not symbolic, but transformative. It is at baptism that one enters into Christ, receives remission of sins, and is added to the church.

Doctrinal Significance & Application

  • One cannot be saved and yet be outside the church—because the church is the body of the saved.
  • Biblical baptism is immersion, for remission of sins, preceded by faith and repentance—not an outward symbol, nor infant sprinkling.
  • Those who claim salvation apart from baptism or outside the church reject Heaven’s own sequence.

Application Today:

Let us reject the man-made shortcuts of the “sinner’s prayer,” altar calls, or faith-only doctrines. Let us preach the same Gospel the apostles preached—and accept only the entrance the Lord Himself grants.

Refutation of False Doctrines

False View #1: Just believe in Jesus and you’re saved; no need for baptism.

๐Ÿ“– Refuted by: Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; Acts 22:16

Truth: Belief alone is not enough. Baptism is where sins are washed away and one enters Christ.

False View #2: Join the church of your choice after salvation.

๐Ÿ“– Refuted by: Acts 2:47; 1 Cor. 12:13

Truth: The saved are not free to choose a denomination—the Lord adds the obedient to His church.

False View #3: Baptism is just a symbol; it doesn’t actually save.

๐Ÿ“– Refuted by: 1 Peter 3:21; Romans 6:3–4

Truth: Baptism now saves us, not by water only, but by obedience through faith.

Conclusion and Exhortation

Entrance into the church is not left to human decision, denominational acceptance, or symbolic gestures. It is God’s act of placing the obedient into the body of Christ. To preach otherwise is to nullify the Gospel.

Exhortation:
If you have not obeyed the Gospel as the Bible teaches—believing, repenting, confessing Christ, and being baptized for the remission of sins—then you have not yet been added by the Lord to His church. Delay no longer. Obey while it is still called “today.”

And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”

— Acts 2:47 (KJV)

Talikuran natin ang gawa-gawang “sinner’s prayer,” altar calls, at faith-only doctrines.

Konklusyon at Panawagan

— Gawa 2:47

The Origin and Error of “Once Saved, Always Saved” (OSAS): A Biblical Expos

English ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ Tagalog The Origin and Error of “Once Saved, Always Saved” (OSAS) A Biblical Exposรฉ An Authoritative Study Using the King James Bible Introduction: A Question of Eternal Security The doctrine of Once Saved, Always Saved (OSAS) asserts that once a person is saved, they can never lose their salvation, regardless of future behavior, apostasy, or rebellion. It is often linked with the phrase “eternal security” in Protestant theology. This study examines the origin, evaluates the biblical claims, and provides a full refutation using only the Scripture as the final and only authority. I. Historical Roots of OSAS (A Brief Context) Though many today assume OSAS to be an apostolic doctrine, its systematized form arose from John Calvin's doctrine of Perseverance of the Saints (TULIP), later popularized by Baptist theologians like Charles Stanley and modern evangelical churches. However, early church fathers such as Tertullian, Orige...

The Promise and Importance of Christ’s Church

English ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ Tagalog     Next ⟶ The Promise and Importance of Christ’s Church "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." — Matthew 16:18 (KJV) Introduction The Church of Christ is not a product of human invention or denominational evolution. It is the fulfillment of a divine promise — a structure built not by human hands, but by the Lord Himself. In a time when religious confusion is widespread and thousands of conflicting churches exist, we must return to the simple, authoritative statement of Jesus: “I will build my church.” (Matt. 16:18) These words mark the beginning of a divine blueprint. This was not a vague intention, nor a mystical concept. Jesus was referring to a real, identifiable, and traceable body of people — the church — that He Himself would build, own, and preserve. “I Will Build My Church” — A Divine...

Restoration Movement: The Illusion of Rebuilding What God Preserved

English ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ Tagalog There Is Nothing to Restore — Just Preach the Gospel A Doctrinal Exposition Affirming the Ongoing Existence and Perfection of God’s Church Introduction In recent centuries, many sincere believers have spoken of a "restoration movement"—the idea that the true church was lost to history and must now be recovered or re-established. But is this concept biblical? Does Scripture ever indicate that the church built by Christ (Matthew 16:18) would vanish, become corrupted, and need a future restoration? The answer, as revealed in the inspired Word of God, is  no . What God  planned before the foundation of the world  (Ephesians 3:9–11), what Christ  purchased with His own blood  (Acts 20:28), and what was  established in power on Pentecost  (Acts 2),  continues to exist today . While men may depart from the truth, the truth remains. And what we are called to do is not to restore, but to  pre...

The Church Built By Jesus Christ In The New testament - Lesson 1

English ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ Tagalog ⟵ Previous Next ⟶ Lesson 1: The Church Planned by God Before the Creation of the Universe Key Passage: Ephesians 3:9–11 “ And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: ” Introduction The concept of the church is often misunderstood—even among believers. To many, it appears to be an afterthought, a temporary institution until Christ returns, or merely a human denomination among many. But the Scriptures teach otherwise. The church was not an accident. It was not a substitute for a failed plan. It was not an invention of man. It was part of God's eternal purpose , rooted i...

Some claim, “Once Saved, Always Saved” (OSAS)—but what if one simple question from Paul demolishes that doctrine entirely? In  Romans 6:1-2 , the apostle confronts the dangerous logic that grace gives license to sin. His answer is sharp, unshakable, and Spirit-inspired. This short but powerful passage doesn’t just challenge OSAS—it delivers the deathblow. Ready to face the truth? Q: Who is speaking in Romans 6:1?
