The Deity of Christ in Early Church Proclamation (Acts)

THE DEITY OF CHRIST — LECTURE 16

Introduction: The First Preaching of the Gospel

After the resurrection and ascension of Christ, the apostles began preaching.

This is recorded in the book of Acts.

These are not later developments
These are the earliest proclamations of the church

Therefore, a critical question:

What did the apostles preach about Jesus from the very beginning?

Did they present Him as:

  • merely a man?
  • a prophet?
  • a created being?

Or something more?

The answer is clear:

They proclaimed Christ with divine authority, identity, and titles belonging to God

THESIS: The Deity of Christ Was Part of the Original Gospel Message

I. Acts 2 — Peter’s Sermon at Pentecost

Acts 2:36
“God hath made that same Jesus… both Lord and Christ.”

A. “Lord” (Κύριος — Kyrios)

This term is used in the Old Testament (LXX) for:

YHWH (the LORD)

B. Exaltation to Divine Authority

Peter is not saying:

  • Jesus became God

But that He is:
recognized and declared as Lord

C. “Hath Made” (Acts 2:36) — Grammar Refutes the “Jesus is Only Man” Claim

Acts 2:36 says:

“…God hath made that same Jesus… both Lord and Christ.”

Some claim this means Jesus was only a man and later became Lord. That is incorrect—both grammatically and contextually.

The phrase “hath made” comes from ἐποίησεν (epoiēsen):

  • Aorist Active Indicative, 3rd Person Singular
  • From ποιέω (poieō)

This verb does not always mean “to create” or “to cause to begin.”
It frequently means:

to appoint, declare, establish, or publicly constitute

The Context Decides the Meaning

Peter is preaching:

  • after the resurrection
  • after the ascension

This is not about Jesus becoming something He was not.

This is about God declaring and manifesting who He already is.

Scripture Cannot Contradict Scripture

If Acts 2:36 meant Jesus only became Lord:

  • John 1:1 would be false (“the Word was God”)
  • John 8:58 would be false (“I am”)
  • Jesus receiving worship would be wrong
  • His authority before Acts 2 would be denied

The Correct Understanding

Acts 2:36 means:

God has publicly established, vindicated, and declared Jesus as
Lord and Christ before all.

Not created into Lord,
but revealed as Lord.

Conclusion of the Grammar

The “Jesus is only man” argument fails because:

  1. ποιέω does not require “created into being”
  2. The context is exaltation, not origin
  3. The whole Bible already declares His Deity

Final blow:

Acts 2:36 does not lower Christ to a man—
it proclaims the crucified Jesus as the Lord.

Conclusion

The earliest sermon presents Jesus as:
Lord — a divine title

II. Acts 3 — The “Prince of Life”

Acts 3:15
“And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead…”

A. “Prince of Life”

From : ἀρχηγός = archēgos = a chief leader: - author, captain, prince.

Meaning:

  • author
  • originator
  • source

Life originates from Him

But Scripture teaches:

Only God is the source of life

Conclusion

Christ is presented as:
the source of life—an attribute of God

III. Acts 7 — Stephen’s Vision

Acts 7:59
“…calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

A. Direct Invocation

Stephen prays:

Not to the Father
But to Jesus

B. Parallel with God

Compare:

Luke 23:46 — Jesus said, “Father… into thy hands I commend my spirit”

Stephen now says:

“Lord Jesus, receive my spirit”

Conclusion

Stephen treats Jesus as:
the one who receives the spirit—divine authority

IV. Acts 9 — Paul’s Conversion

Acts 9:5
“…I am Jesus whom thou persecutest…”

A. Identity of Christ

Paul thought he was persecuting:

  • followers

But Jesus says:

“you are persecuting Me”

B. Implication

Christ is identified with His people
His authority is supreme

C. Response of Paul

Paul immediately acknowledges Him as:

“Lord”

V. Acts 20:28 — The Blood of God

“…the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.”

A. Direct Statement

“God… with His own blood”

Conclusion

The one who shed blood:

is identified as God

VI. Titles Given to Christ in Acts

Throughout Acts, Christ is called:

  • Lord (Acts 2:36)
  • Prince of Life (Acts 3:15)
  • Judge (Acts 10:42)
  • Savior (Acts 5:31)

Observation

These are not minor titles

These are roles belonging to God

VII. CENI — Establishing the Doctrine

Command (Direct Statements)

  • Acts 20:28 — God’s blood
  • Acts 2:36 — Lord

Example

  • Stephen prays to Jesus
  • Apostles preach His authority

Necessary Inference

If:

  • Christ is called Lord (divine title)
  • Christ receives prayer
  • Christ is source of life

Then:

Christ is God

VIII. Apologetic — Answering Historical Objections

❌   “The Deity of Christ developed later”

Refuted by:

Acts = earliest preaching

Already includes:

  • divine titles
  • divine functions
  • divine authority

❌   “Early church saw Jesus as only human”

Refuted by:

  • Prayer to Christ
  • Titles of deity
  • Divine authority

IX. Polemic — Refuting Modern Claims

❌   “Doctrine of Christ’s Deity was invented later”

False because:

It is present in:

  • Acts sermons
  • earliest preaching

❌   “Apostles did not teach this clearly”

False because:

They:

  • called Him Lord
  • prayed to Him
  • attributed divine works

X. The Consistency of the Gospel Message

From the beginning:

  • Christ is Lord
  • Christ is Savior
  • Christ is divine

No evolution
No development

Only consistent proclamation

Conclusion: The Original Gospel Includes His Deity

The book of Acts shows:

  • The apostles preached Christ as Lord
  • They attributed divine authority to Him
  • They prayed to Him
  • They declared His divine work

Therefore:

The Deity of Christ is not a later doctrine—it is part of the original proclamation of the Gospel.

Final Statement:

From the very beginning, the apostles preached Jesus not merely as man, but as Lord, Savior, and the divine source of life—confirming His Deity as foundational to the Gospel itself.

I. Mga Gawa 2 — Pangangaral ni Pedro

A. “Panginoon” (Kyrios)

Panginoon (YHWH)

B. Kahulugan

Hindi ibig sabihin na:

  • naging Dios si Jesus

Kundi:

  • ipinahayag Siya bilang Panginoon

  • Aorist Active Indicative, 3rd Person Singular
  • mula sa ποιέω (poieō)

italaga, ipahayag, itatag, o ipakilala

Panginoon at Cristo

Hindi Siya ginawang Panginoon sa kalikasan,
kundi ipinakilala bilang Panginoon

II. Mga Gawa 3 — “Lumikha ng Buhay”

Mga Gawa 3:15
“…at pinatay ninyo ang Lumikha ng buhay…”

A. “Lumikha ng Buhay”

Mula sa : ἀρχηγός = archēgos = isang punong pinuno: - lumikha o may-akda, kapitan, prinsipe.

ibig sabihin:

  • pinagmulan
  • may-akda
  • nagbibigay ng buhay

Ngunit ayon sa Biblia:

Ang Dios lamang ang pinagmumulan ng buhay

Konklusyon

Si Cristo ay:

pinagmumulan ng buhay—isang katangian ng Dios

III. Mga Gawa 7 — Panalangin ni Esteban

Mga Gawa 7:59
“…Panginoong Jesus, tanggapin mo ang aking espiritu.”

A. Direktang Panalangin

Hindi sa Ama
Kundi kay Jesus

B. Paghahambing

Kaya naintindihan niya agad

Agad Siyang kinilala ni Pablo bilang:

“Panginoon”

Mali dahil:

Malinaw ang kanilang:

  • pangangaral
  • panalangin
  • patotoo

X. Iisang Mensahe mula sa Simula

Mula sa pinakaunang pangangaral:

  • Si Cristo ay Panginoon
  • Si Cristo ay Tagapagligtas
  • Si Cristo ay may pagka-Dios

Walang pagbabago
Walang dagdag

Iisang mensahe

Pangwakas: Ang Orihinal na Ebanghelyo ay Ipinangaral Pagka-Dios ni Cristo

Malinaw sa Mga Gawa:

  • Ipinangaral si Cristo bilang Panginoon
  • May kapangyarihan Siya ng Dios
  • Tinatawag Siya sa panalangin
  • Tinukoy Siya bilang Dios

The Origin and Error of “Once Saved, Always Saved” (OSAS): A Biblical Exposé

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog The Origin and Error of “Once Saved, Always Saved” (OSAS) A Biblical Exposé An Authoritative Study Using the King James Bible Introduction: A Question of Eternal Security The doctrine of Once Saved, Always Saved (OSAS) asserts that once a person is saved, they can never lose their salvation, regardless of future behavior, apostasy, or rebellion. It is often linked with the phrase “eternal security” in Protestant theology. This study examines the origin, evaluates the biblical claims, and provides a full refutation using only the Scripture as the final and only authority. I. Historical Roots of OSAS (A Brief Context) Though many today assume OSAS to be an apostolic doctrine, its systematized form arose from John Calvin's doctrine of Perseverance of the Saints (TULIP), later popularized by Baptist theologians like Charles Stanley and modern evangelical churches. However, early church fathers such as Tertullian, Orige...

The Promise and Importance of Christ’s Church

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog     Next ⟶ The Promise and Importance of Christ’s Church "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." — Matthew 16:18 (KJV) Introduction The Church of Christ is not a product of human invention or denominational evolution. It is the fulfillment of a divine promise — a structure built not by human hands, but by the Lord Himself. In a time when religious confusion is widespread and thousands of conflicting churches exist, we must return to the simple, authoritative statement of Jesus: “I will build my church.” (Matt. 16:18) These words mark the beginning of a divine blueprint. This was not a vague intention, nor a mystical concept. Jesus was referring to a real, identifiable, and traceable body of people — the church — that He Himself would build, own, and preserve. “I Will Build My Church” — A Divine Dec...

Grace, Faith, and Works

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog Grace, Faith, And Works A Biblical Exegesis Of Ephesians 2:8–10 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” – Ephesians 2:8–10 I. Introduction: Why This Study Matters Now More Than Ever In a religious world increasingly divided by theological confusion and denominational doctrines, few passages are more quoted yet more misunderstood than Ephesians 2:8–10 : “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” While this passage declares foundational truths about salvation, it has been misappropria...

Restoration Movement: The Illusion of Rebuilding What God Preserved

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog There Is Nothing to Restore — Just Preach the Gospel A Doctrinal Exposition Affirming the Ongoing Existence and Perfection of God’s Church Introduction In recent centuries, many sincere believers have spoken of a "restoration movement"—the idea that the true church was lost to history and must now be recovered or re-established. But is this concept biblical? Does Scripture ever indicate that the church built by Christ (Matthew 16:18) would vanish, become corrupted, and need a future restoration? The answer, as revealed in the inspired Word of God, is  no . What God  planned before the foundation of the world  (Ephesians 3:9–11), what Christ  purchased with His own blood  (Acts 20:28), and what was  established in power on Pentecost  (Acts 2),  continues to exist today . While men may depart from the truth, the truth remains. And what we are called to do is not to restore, but to  pre...

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog What Must I Do To Be Saved? A Doctrinal Study in Biblical Salvation THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION YOU MUST ASK — AND GOD HAS ALREADY ANSWERED IT There is no question more urgent, more eternal, and more personal than this: “What must I do to be saved?” This question is not a modern invention — it is already found in the New Testament , asked by real people in real moments of conviction, and answered by the Holy Spirit through the apostles of Jesus Christ. This means every truth-seeker today must stop looking elsewhere for answers. God has already spoken. His answer is final. His plan is clear. If the whole world knew God’s answer to this question, no one would be lost. So if what you’ve heard about salvation differs from what the Bible teaches — leave that group, that preacher, or that tradition immediately. “ If anyone preaches another gospel… let him be accursed. ” (Galatians 1:8–9) Are you ready to hear the real answer from...

The Church Built By Jesus Christ In The New testament - Lesson 1

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog ⟵ Previous Next ⟶ Lesson 1: The Church Planned by God Before the Creation of the Universe Key Passage: Ephesians 3:9–11 “ And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: ” Introduction The concept of the church is often misunderstood—even among believers. To many, it appears to be an afterthought, a temporary institution until Christ returns, or merely a human denomination among many. But the Scriptures teach otherwise. The church was not an accident. It was not a substitute for a failed plan. It was not an invention of man. It was part of God's eternal purpose , rooted i...

“Jesus Called Us Brethren”

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog "Go and Tell My brethren" Text: “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.’” - Matthew 28:10 I. Introduction: The Significance of the Word "Brethren" After His glorious resurrection, Jesus could have referred to His disciples with any term—“servants,” “students,” or “followers.” But He chose the word “brethren.” This word carries weight. It reflects forgiveness, restored fellowship, and most importantly, a shared relationship with the Father. Why does Jesus now call His disciples brethren? What does that mean for us today? And how did we become worthy of such a name? II. Context and Background Let’s recall that before the crucifixion, His disciples deserted Him in fear (Matthew 26:56). Peter even denied Him three times. They failed Him at His darkest hour. Yet, after rising from the grave, Jesus doesn’t rebuke them—He calls them “My b...
