INTRODUCTION

Among the many teachings of the apostle Paul, few have been more debated, neglected, or misunderstood in modern times than his words in 1 Corinthians 11:2–16 concerning the veil. For some, this passage is dismissed as an artifact of ancient Corinthian culture. For others, it is embraced but with little understanding of its depth and significance. And for still others, it is a source of contention, avoided in preaching and practice because it seems “too controversial.”

Yet the inspired Word leaves us no room to treat this as an optional matter. Paul begins his instruction by commending the Corinthians for keeping the ordinances as delivered (1 Cor. 11:2) and ends by affirming that what he has taught is the uniform practice of all the churches of God (v. 16). Between those verses, he builds a layered argument that appeals not to culture but to creation order, headship, the witness of angels, and the testimony of nature itself.

This introduction makes clear that the question before us is not whether veiling was practiced in the first century—it certainly was—but whether the principle behind it was temporary or timeless. If Paul’s reasoning is bound to creation and to the order God established from the beginning, then the veil cannot be dismissed as a local custom. It stands as a visible expression of an eternal truth: that God is the head of Christ, Christ is the head of man, and man is the head of woman (1 Cor. 11:3).

In this study, we will approach the question with a single guiding conviction: Scripture interprets Scripture. We will not lean on denominational traditions, human speculation, or cultural trends. Instead, we will carefully exegete the inspired text, consider the Greek terms Paul used, survey the testimony of the early church, answer common objections, and show how this teaching fits into the broader theological framework of God’s order.

The question, “Is the wearing of the veil a salvation issue?” will also be addressed directly. The answer lies not in the cloth itself but in what the cloth represents—submission to God’s Word and God’s order. For while the veil may not be listed as a condition of initial salvation, willful rejection of apostolic teaching places one’s faith on dangerous ground (1 Cor. 14:37; James 4:17).

This book is written for two audiences:

·     For brethren in Christ, that they may see that the veil is not cultural or optional, but a commandment of the Lord through His apostle.

·     For seekers outside the church, that they may see how consistent, harmonious, and authoritative the Scriptures are, even on issues often thought minor.

May this introduction prepare your heart and mind for the chapters that follow. As you read, remember the call of the Bereans who “searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11).

Sa lahat ng mga aral ng apostol Pablo, kakaunti lamang ang mas pinagtatalunan, napapabayaan, o hindi naiintindihan sa panahon ngayon kaysa sa kaniyang sinabi sa 1 Corinto 11:2–16 tungkol sa pagsusuot ng belo. Para sa ilan, itinuturing nila itong bahagi lang ng kultura ng sinaunang Corinto. Para naman sa iba, tinatanggap nila ito pero hindi lubos na nauunawaan ang lalim at kahalagahan nito. At may ilan din na iniiwasang ituro o isagawa ito dahil para sa kanila, ito ay “masyadong kontrobersyal.”

Ngunit ang kinasihang Salita ng Diyos ay hindi nagbibigay ng puwang para ituring ito na opsyonal lang. Sinimulan ni Pablo ang kaniyang pagtuturo sa pamamagitan ng pagpuri sa mga taga-Corinto dahil sa kanilang pag-iingat sa mga ordinansang itinuro sa kanila (1 Cor. 11:2), at tinapos niya ito sa pagsasabing ang kanyang itinuro ay sinusunod sa lahat ng mga iglesia ng Diyos (talata 16). Sa pagitan ng dalawang pahayag (talata) na ito, naglatag si Pablo ng matibay na dahilan—hindi nakabatay sa kultura, kundi sa kaayusan ng paglalang, sa pagkapang-ulo (headship), sa patotoo ng mga anghel, at maging sa mismong patunay ng kalikasan.

Kaya malinaw na ang tanong ay hindi kung ginagamit nga ba ang belo noong unang siglo—sapagkat totoo ngang isinusuot ito—kundi kung ang prinsipyo sa likod nito ay pansamantala lang o panghabang-panahon. At kung ang pangangatwiran ni Pablo ay nakaugat sa kaayusan ng Diyos mula pa sa paglalang, kung gayon ang belo ay hindi lamang lokal na kaugalian. Ito ay isang nakikitang tanda ng walang hanggang katotohanan: na ang Diyos ang ulo ni Cristo, si Cristo ang ulo ng lalaki, at ang lalaki ang ulo ng babae (1 Cor. 11:3).

Sa pag-aaral na ito, aatakihin natin ang usapin sa isang tiyak na paninindigan: ang Kasulatan ay nagpapaliwanag ng Kasulatan. Hindi tayo aasa sa mga tradisyon ng denominasyon, sa haka-haka ng tao, o sa mga uso ng kultura. Sa halip, pag-aaralan nating mabuti ang mismong teksto ng Biblia, titignan ang mga salitang Griego na ginamit ni Pablo, sisilipin ang patotoo ng unang iglesia, sasagutin ang karaniwang mga pagtutol, at ipapakita kung paano ang katuruang ito ay akma sa mas malawak na plano at kaayusan ng Diyos.

Sasagutin din natin ang tanong na, “Ang pagsusuot ba ng belo ay usapin ng kaligtasan?” Ang sagot ay hindi nakabatay sa mismong tela ng belo, kundi sa kahulugan nito—ang pagpapasakop sa Salita ng Diyos at sa Kanyang kaayusan. Sapagkat bagaman ang belo ay hindi nakalista bilang kundisyon ng unang pagkaligtas, ang sadyang pagtanggi sa aral ng mga apostol ay naglalagay sa pananampalataya ng tao sa mapanganib na kalagayan (1 Cor. 14:37; Santiago 4:17).

Isinulat ang serye na ito para sa dalawang uri ng mambabasa:

·     Para sa mga kapatid kay Cristo, upang makita nila na ang belo ay hindi pangkultura o opsyonal lamang, kundi isang utos ng Panginoon sa pamamagitan ng Kanyang apostol.

·     Para sa mga naghahanap na wala pa sa iglesia, upang makita nila na ang Kasulatan ay buo, magkakaugnay, at may kapamahalaan—kahit sa mga bagay na madalas ituring ng tao na maliit.

Nawa’y ihanda ng panimulang ito ang iyong puso at isipan sa mga susunod na kabanata. At sa iyong pagbabasa, alalahanin ang halimbawa ng mga taga-Berea na “araw-araw nilang sinusuri ang mga kasulatan, kung tunay nga ang mga bagay na ito” (Gawa 17:11).
