Christian Women and the Veil in Prayer (Ch. 5)

1 Corinthians 11:2-16


Chapter 5

APOLOGETIC DEFENSE

The teaching of the head covering has not only been questioned by brethren but mocked or dismissed by the world. Feminism views it as oppression. Denominationalism often calls it non-essential. Skeptics call it outdated. Yet when we allow Scripture to interpret Scripture, and apply careful reasoning, the case stands unshakable.

5.1 The Appeal to Adam and Eve

Whenever Scripture anchors a doctrine in Adam and Eve, it declares it to be timeless:

·     Marriage — Jesus: “From the beginning it was not so” (Matt. 19:4–6).

·     Women’s silence in the church — Paul: “For Adam was first formed, then Eve” (1 Tim. 2:13).

·     Head covering — Paul: “For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man” (1 Cor. 11:8).

If the veil is cultural, then marriage and women’s silence are cultural also. To accept one as permanent while dismissing the other as temporary is inconsistent and dishonest.

5.2 Jesus’ Reasoning Matches Paul’s

Some suggest Paul was stricter than Jesus. But notice how their reasoning matches:

·          Jesus: Appeals to Genesis to prove permanence of marriage.

·          Paul: Appeals to Genesis to prove permanence of headship and covering.

Both apply creation order as binding across all ages. Thus, Paul is not innovating but applying the same logic as Christ.

5.3 Angels as Witnesses

Why mention angels? Because worship is not just horizontal but vertical. Angels are observers of divine order in the assembly (1 Cor. 4:9; Heb. 1:14).

·     Angels transcend all culture.

·     Their presence makes the covering a cosmic testimony.

·     To dismiss the covering as cultural ignores the heavenly dimension of worship.

5.4 The Universality of Church Practice

Paul closes with: “We have no such custom, neither the churches of God” (v.16).

·        This was not Corinth-only.

·        Paul appeals to all congregations.

·        Apostolic teaching is consistent everywhere (1 Cor. 4:17).

If the veil were optional or cultural, why insist that every church followed it?

5.5 Addressing Feminist Objections

Modern feminism rejects any visible symbol of submission. Yet Scripture calls submission beautiful, not oppressive.

·     Submission reflects Christ Himself, who submitted to the Father (1 Cor. 11:3; Phil. 2:6–8).

·     The veil is not a symbol of inferiority, but of divine order.

·     To reject it on feminist grounds is to reject the humility of Christ.

5.6 Addressing Denominational Objections

Many denominations dismiss the veil, claiming: “It’s not essential to salvation.”

·     True, the veil alone does not save. But neither does baptism, if divorced from faith.

·     The issue is obedience. Jesus said: “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15).

·     The covering reveals whether we honor apostolic teaching or dismiss it as cultural.

5.7 Addressing Skeptical Objections

Skeptics often say: “This is outdated.” But by what standard?

·     If “outdated” means culturally unpopular, then baptism, weekly communion, and singing-only worship are outdated too.

·     God’s Word is not bound by culture (Ps. 119:89).

·     To call the veil outdated is to accuse God’s eternal Word of being temporary, which undermines all doctrine.

5.8 The Logical Consistency

If the veil is cultural:

·     Marriage permanence (Matt. 19) is cultural.

·     Women’s silence (1 Tim. 2) is cultural.

·     Headship itself (1 Cor. 11:3) is cultural.

But no one who denies the veil dares to consistently apply that reasoning. Selective dismissal betrays prejudice, not exegesis.

5.9 The Broader Witness

The veil aligns with the broader biblical theme of visible obedience:

·     Noah building the ark (Gen. 6:22).

·     Israel keeping the Passover with blood on the door (Exod. 12:13).

·     Baptism as visible burial and resurrection with Christ (Rom. 6:3–4).

God has always used physical acts to manifest spiritual truths. The veil fits this consistent pattern.

5.10 Conclusion of Defense

The apologetic case is clear:

·     Adam and Eve anchor the command in creation.

·     Jesus and Paul reason the same way.

·     Angels witness worship beyond culture.

·     The churches universally practiced it.

·     Feminist, denominational, and skeptical objections all fail when tested by Scripture.

The veil stands not as a relic of culture but as a living testimony of divine order in worship.

PAGTATANGGOL SA ARAL

Ang pagtuturo tungkol sa belo ay hindi lamang kinukuwestiyon ng ilan sa mga kapatid kundi tinatawanan at tinatanggihan din ng sanlibutan. Para sa mga feminist, ito raw ay pang-aapi. Para sa mga denominasyon, ito raw ay hindi mahalaga. Para sa mga mapangduda, ito raw ay luma na at wala nang halaga. Ngunit kung hayaan nating ang Kasulatan ang magpaliwanag sa sarili nito, at suriin ito nang maingat, makikita natin na ang aral para sa paggamit ng belo sa pananalangin ng mga kababaihang Kristiyano ay matatag at hindi matinag.

5.1 Ang Pagbanggit kay Adan at Eva

Tuwing ang Kasulatan ay inuugnay ang isang aral kay Adan at Eva, ito ay palatandaan na ang aral na iyon ay walang hanggan:

·        Pag-aasawa — Sabi ni Jesus: “Mula pa sa pasimula ay hindi gayon” (Mat. 19:4–6).

·        Belo — Sabi ni Pablo: “Sapagkat ang lalaki ay hindi sa babae, kundi ang babae ay sa lalaki” (1 Cor. 11:8).

Kung ang belo ay panlupa at panandalian lamang, dapat ganun din ang pag-aasawa at ang katahimikan ng babae sa iglesia. Ang pagtanggap sa isa bilang permanente, ngunit ang isa ay tinatanggihan bilang pansamantala, ay hindi tapat at hindi tama.

5.2 Ang Paliwanag ni Jesus at ni Pablo ay Magkatulad

May ilan na nagsasabing mas mahigpit daw si Pablo kaysa kay Jesus. Ngunit pansinin kung paanong magkatulad ang kanilang batayan:

·        Si Jesus: Gumamit ng Genesis upang patunayan na ang kasal ay permanente.

·        Si Pablo: Gumamit din ng Genesis upang patunayan na ang pagkakasunud-sunod ng pang-ulo at ang pagsusuot ng belo ay permanente.

Pareho nilang ginamit ang kaayusan ng paglalang bilang batayan sa lahat ng panahon. Hindi nagdadagdag si Pablo ng bagong aral, kundi ipinatutupad ang parehong lohika na ginamit ni Cristo.

5.3 Ang mga Anghel bilang Saksi

Bakit binanggit ang mga anghel? Sapagkat ang pagsamba ay hindi lamang nakikita ng tao kundi pati ng langit. Ang mga anghel ay mga tagasaksi ng kaayusan ng Diyos sa pagtitipon (1 Cor. 4:9; Heb. 1:14).

·        Ang mga anghel ay hindi nasasaklaw ng kultura.

·        Ang kanilang presensya, na binanggit ni Pablo, ay gumagawa sa belo bilang patotoo sa buong kalangitan.

·        Ang pagturing sa belo bilang pangkultura lamang ay pagwawalang-bahala sa aspeto ng pagiging makalangit ng pagsamba.

5.4 Ang Pagkakaisa ng Lahat ng Iglesia

Nagtapos si Pablo sa ganito: “walang gayong ugali kami, ni ang iglesia man ng Dios.” (v. 16).

·        Hindi ito para sa Corinto lamang.

·        Umapela si Pablo sa lahat ng mga iglesia.

·        Ang aral ng mga apostol ay pareho saanman (1 Cor. 4:17).

Kung ang belo ay opsyonal o pangkultura lamang, bakit ipinatutupad ito sa lahat ng iglesia?

5.5 Pagtugon sa Pagtutol ng Feminismo

Tinatanggihan ng modernong feminismo ang anumang simbolo ng pagpapasakop. Ngunit sa Kasulatan, ang pagpapasakop ay maganda at hindi pang-aapi.

·        Si Cristo mismo ay nagpasakop sa Ama (1 Cor. 11:3; Fil. 2:6–8).

·        Ang belo ay hindi tanda ng pagiging mababa, kundi ng kaayusan ng Diyos.

·        Ang pagtanggi rito dahil sa pananaw ng feminismo ay pagtanggi rin sa pagpapakumbaba ni Cristo.

5.6 Pagtugon sa Pagtutol ng mga Denominasyon

Maraming denominasyon ang nagsasabing: “Hindi naman ito mahalaga sa kaligtasan.”

·        Totoo, hindi ang belo ang tuwirang nagliligtas. Ngunit gayundin, ang bautismo ay walang saysay kung hiwalay sa pananampalataya.

·        Ang usapin dito ay pagtalima (pagsunod). Sabi ni Jesus: “Kung ako’y inyong iniibig, ay tutuparin ninyo ang aking mga utos” (Juan 14:15).

·        Ang belo ay sumusubok kung tunay nating iginagalang ang aral ng mga apostol o kung binabalewala natin ito bilang pangkultura lamang.

5.7 Pagtugon sa Pagtutol ng mga Mapangduda

Sinasabi ng ilan: “Luma na ito.” Ngunit ano ang batayan?

·        Kung ang “luma” ay ibig sabihin ay hindi na uso sa kultura, ganun din ang bautismo, lingguhang Hapunan ng Panginoon, at awitan lamang sa pagsamba.

·        Ang Salita ng Diyos ay hindi nababago ng panahon (Awit 119:89).

·        Ang pagsasabing ang belo ay lipas na ay parang pagsasabing ang Salita ng Diyos ay panandalian lamang — na sumisira sa lahat ng doktrina.

5.8 Ang Lohikal na Palagian (Consistency)

Kung ang belo ay pangkultura lamang:

·        Ang pagiging permanente ng kasal (Mat. 19) ay pangkultura rin.

·        Ang katahimikan ng babae (1 Tim. 2) ay pangkultura rin.

·        Ang mismong headship (1 Cor. 11:3) ay pangkultura rin.

Ngunit walang sinomang tumatanggi sa belo na handang tanggapin ang lahat ng implikasyong ito. Ang pagpili ng aral na tatanggapin at tatanggihan ay hindi tamang pagtrato ng Kasulatan kundi mapagpili (selective) lamang.

5.9 Ang Mas Malawak na Patotoo

Ang belo ay umaayon sa mas malawak na tema ng Bibliya tungkol sa nakikitang pagtalima:

·        Si Noe na nagtayo ng arka (Gen. 6:22).

·        Ang Israel na naglagay ng dugo sa pintuan sa Paskua (Ex. 12:13).

·        Ang bautismo bilang nakikitang paglilibing at pagkabuhay kay Cristo (Rom. 6:3–4).

Lagi nang gumamit ang Diyos ng mga nakikitang gawa upang ipakita ang espirituwal na katotohanan. Ang belo ay bahagi ng pareho at tiyak na padron.

5.10 Konklusyon ng Pagtatanggol

Malinaw ang pagtatanggol para sa belo:

·        Si Adan at Eva ang pundasyon ng utos na ito.

·        Magkatulad ang paliwanag ni Jesus at ni Pablo.

·        Ang mga anghel ay saksi ng pagsamba na malayo sa kultura.

·        Ang lahat ng iglesia ay pare-parehong nagsagawa nito.

·        Nabibigo ang mga tutol mula sa feminismo, denominasyon, at mga mapangduda kapag sinukat sa Kasulatan.

Ang belo ay hindi isang relic ng kultura kundi isang buhay na patotoo ng kaayusan ng Diyos sa pagsamba.
