Establishing Bible Authority

A Theological and Exegetical Analysis

Introduction: The Necessity of Bible Authority

In a world where religious pluralism and personal interpretations abound, the concept of Bible authority must be firmly established. Without divine authority, human opinions and traditions would dictate faith and practice, leading to confusion and error. This study aims to demonstrate that the Bible alone is the final authority in all matters of faith and doctrine, analyzing key biblical principles and addressing common false narratives.

I. The Source of Bible Authority: God as the Ultimate Authority

  1. God is Sovereign and the Ultimate Lawgiver
    • Psalm 33:9 – "For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast."
    • Isaiah 46:10 – God declares the end from the beginning; His counsel shall stand.
    • James 4:12 – “There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy."
  2. God’s Authority is Expressed Through His Word
    • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God... that the man of God may be complete,"
    • John 17:17 – "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth."
    • Psalm 119:89 – "Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven."

Since God is the absolute authorityHis revelation in Scripture is the sole standard by which man must live.

II. The Authority of Christ: The Mediator of Divine Will

  1. Jesus Possesses All Authority
    • Matthew 28:18 – "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth."
    • John 12:48 – "the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day."
    • Hebrews 1:1-2 – "God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past... has in these last days spoken to us by His Son,…"
  2. Christ’s Authority is Exclusive and Final
    • Matthew 7:21-23 – Not everyone who calls Him "Lord" will be saved, but only those who do the will of the Father.
    • Ephesians 1:22-23 – Christ is the head of the church, meaning He alone dictates doctrine.
    • Colossians 3:17 – "And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus,…"

Since Christ is the ultimate authority, all religious doctrines and practices must be measured by His word alone.

III. The Role of Apostolic Doctrine in Establishing Authority

  1. The Apostles as Christ’s Spokesmen
    • John 14:26 – The Holy Spirit guided the apostles into "all truth."
    • Matthew 16:19 – The apostles were given the "keys of the kingdom."
    • Ephesians 2:20 – The church is "built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,…"
  2. Apostolic Teachings Are Binding
    • Acts 2:42 – "And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine"
    • 1 Corinthians 14:37 – "If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord."
    • Galatians 1:8-9 – Any gospel contrary to the apostolic teaching is accursed.

Since the apostles spoke by divine inspiration, their writings form the New Testament’s binding authority.

IV. The Pattern of Authority in the Bible: Command, Example, and Necessary Inference

  1. Direct Command (Explicit Statements of God’s Will)
    • Mark 16:16 – "He who believes and is baptized will be saved;…"
    • 1 Corinthians 16:2 – "On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside,…"
  2. Approved Apostolic Example
    • Acts 20:7 – The disciples came together on the first day of the week to break bread (Lord’s Supper).
    • Acts 8:38 – Baptism involved immersion, as demonstrated by Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch.
  3. Necessary Inference (Logical Conclusions from Scripture)
    • Hebrews 10:25 – Since forsaking the assembly is condemned, regular attendance is commanded.
    • Matthew 22:32 – Jesus proves the resurrection by inference from Exodus 3:6.

The Bible establishes authority through direct statements, examples, and logical necessity.

V. Refuting False Narratives Against Bible Authority

  1. "The Bible is Subject to Personal Interpretation"
    • 2 Peter 1:20-21 – "no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation,"
    • Acts 17:11 – The Bereans searched the Scriptures daily to verify the truth.
  2. "Tradition and Church Councils Have Equal Authority"
    • Matthew 15:9 – "And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.”
    • Colossians 2:8 – "Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit,…"
  3. "We Are Led by the Spirit, Not the Bible"
    • John 16:13 – The Holy Spirit revealed truth to the apostles, now contained in the written Word.
    • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – Scripture thoroughly equips man for every good work.

The Scriptures alone determine doctrine and practiceanything beyond them is unauthorized.

Conclusion: The Sole Authority of the Bible in All Matters

The Bible alone is the final authority, as it is the revelation of God, the authority of Christ, and the foundation of apostolic teaching. It establishes doctrine through commands, examples, and necessary inferences, rejecting human traditions and personal opinions.

To ensure salvation, one must abide by its teachings alone, as anything outside of what is written (1 Corinthians 4:6) leads to apostasy. Let us submit fully to the authority of God’s Word.

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." (Psalm 119:105)

Pagtatatag ng Awtoridad ng Bibliya

Isang Teolohikal at Eksposisyong Pagsusuri

Konklusyon: Ang Bibliya Bilang Natatanging Awtoridad

(Awit 119:105)

The Origin and Error of “Once Saved, Always Saved” (OSAS): A Biblical Exposé

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog The Origin and Error of “Once Saved, Always Saved” (OSAS) A Biblical Exposé An Authoritative Study Using the King James Bible Introduction: A Question of Eternal Security The doctrine of Once Saved, Always Saved (OSAS) asserts that once a person is saved, they can never lose their salvation, regardless of future behavior, apostasy, or rebellion. It is often linked with the phrase “eternal security” in Protestant theology. This study examines the origin, evaluates the biblical claims, and provides a full refutation using only the Scripture as the final and only authority. I. Historical Roots of OSAS (A Brief Context) Though many today assume OSAS to be an apostolic doctrine, its systematized form arose from John Calvin's doctrine of Perseverance of the Saints (TULIP), later popularized by Baptist theologians like Charles Stanley and modern evangelical churches. However, early church fathers such as Tertullian, Orige...

The Promise and Importance of Christ’s Church

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog     Next ⟶ The Promise and Importance of Christ’s Church "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." — Matthew 16:18 (KJV) Introduction The Church of Christ is not a product of human invention or denominational evolution. It is the fulfillment of a divine promise — a structure built not by human hands, but by the Lord Himself. In a time when religious confusion is widespread and thousands of conflicting churches exist, we must return to the simple, authoritative statement of Jesus: “I will build my church.” (Matt. 16:18) These words mark the beginning of a divine blueprint. This was not a vague intention, nor a mystical concept. Jesus was referring to a real, identifiable, and traceable body of people — the church — that He Himself would build, own, and preserve. “I Will Build My Church” — A Divine Dec...

Grace, Faith, and Works

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog Grace, Faith, And Works A Biblical Exegesis Of Ephesians 2:8–10 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” – Ephesians 2:8–10 I. Introduction: Why This Study Matters Now More Than Ever In a religious world increasingly divided by theological confusion and denominational doctrines, few passages are more quoted yet more misunderstood than Ephesians 2:8–10 : “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” While this passage declares foundational truths about salvation, it has been misappropria...

Restoration Movement: The Illusion of Rebuilding What God Preserved

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog There Is Nothing to Restore — Just Preach the Gospel A Doctrinal Exposition Affirming the Ongoing Existence and Perfection of God’s Church Introduction In recent centuries, many sincere believers have spoken of a "restoration movement"—the idea that the true church was lost to history and must now be recovered or re-established. But is this concept biblical? Does Scripture ever indicate that the church built by Christ (Matthew 16:18) would vanish, become corrupted, and need a future restoration? The answer, as revealed in the inspired Word of God, is  no . What God  planned before the foundation of the world  (Ephesians 3:9–11), what Christ  purchased with His own blood  (Acts 20:28), and what was  established in power on Pentecost  (Acts 2),  continues to exist today . While men may depart from the truth, the truth remains. And what we are called to do is not to restore, but to  pre...

The Church Built By Jesus Christ In The New testament - Lesson 1

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog ⟵ Previous Next ⟶ Lesson 1: The Church Planned by God Before the Creation of the Universe Key Passage: Ephesians 3:9–11 “ And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: ” Introduction The concept of the church is often misunderstood—even among believers. To many, it appears to be an afterthought, a temporary institution until Christ returns, or merely a human denomination among many. But the Scriptures teach otherwise. The church was not an accident. It was not a substitute for a failed plan. It was not an invention of man. It was part of God's eternal purpose , rooted i...

“Jesus Called Us Brethren”

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog "Go and Tell My brethren" Text: “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.’” - Matthew 28:10 I. Introduction: The Significance of the Word "Brethren" After His glorious resurrection, Jesus could have referred to His disciples with any term—“servants,” “students,” or “followers.” But He chose the word “brethren.” This word carries weight. It reflects forgiveness, restored fellowship, and most importantly, a shared relationship with the Father. Why does Jesus now call His disciples brethren? What does that mean for us today? And how did we become worthy of such a name? II. Context and Background Let’s recall that before the crucifixion, His disciples deserted Him in fear (Matthew 26:56). Peter even denied Him three times. They failed Him at His darkest hour. Yet, after rising from the grave, Jesus doesn’t rebuke them—He calls them “My b...

The Deathblow to OSAS

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog Romans 6:1-2 — The Deathblow to OSAS with One Simple Question "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? - Romans 6:1-2 Can You Keep Sinning and Still Be Saved? Paul Says: Absolutely Not! Some claim, “Once Saved, Always Saved” (OSAS)—but what if one simple question from Paul demolishes that doctrine entirely? In  Romans 6:1-2 , the apostle confronts the dangerous logic that grace gives license to sin. His answer is sharp, unshakable, and Spirit-inspired. This short but powerful passage doesn’t just challenge OSAS—it delivers the deathblow. Ready to face the truth? Q: Who is speaking in Romans 6:1? A:  The apostle  Paul —a faithful Christian, divinely inspired. Q: Who does the word "we" refer to? A:  To  Paul and other Christians . Those already  saved ,  baptized , and  wal...
