Lesson 6: The Worship of the Church

Key Passage: John 4:23–24

“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

Introduction

Worship is not about personal preference, emotion, or cultural tradition—it is about what God desires. Jesus declared that true worshippers must worship the Father “in spirit and in truth.” This statement forever defines the standard for acceptable worship. In a world where churches compete for attention with entertainment, performance, and innovation, the Lord's church must return to New Testament worship—as revealed by the Holy Spirit, not imagined by men. This lesson will expose the pattern, the purpose, and the purity of true worship.

Historical Context

In John 4, Jesus speaks to a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. The Samaritans worshiped in Mount Gerizim, while the Jews worshiped in Jerusalem. This conversation occurred under the Old Covenant, yet Jesus points forward to a new kind of worship—no longer tied to a physical place, but centered in spirit and truth. This marked a radical shift: worship would no longer be about geography, but about heart and obedience to divine truth.

Biblical Context

The New Testament reveals five distinct acts of worship practiced by the early church—authorized by God, consistent with truth, and conducted with reverent spirit:

1. Singing (A cappella, congregational)

  • Ephesians 5:19 — “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs… singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.”
  • Colossians 3:16 — “...singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
  • Hebrews 13:15 — “...the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.”

No New Testament passage authorizes instrumental music in worship. Singing is vocal, spiritual, and directed from the heart to God.

2. Praying

  • Acts 2:42 — “And they continued stedfastly in... prayers.”
  • 1 Timothy 2:1–8 — Prayers of intercession, supplication, thanksgiving.
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:17 — “Pray without ceasing.”

Prayer is communication with God led by a faithful man—always offered in Jesus’ name (John 16:23).

3. Preaching and Teaching

  • Acts 20:7 — Paul preached when disciples gathered on the first day of the week.
  • 2 Timothy 4:2 — “Preach the word...”
  • 1 Corinthians 14:26 — Edification must be the purpose of every message.

The pulpit is not for motivational speaking or entertainment—it is for the proclamation of God’s Word.

4. Giving (Freewill Offering)

  • 1 Corinthians 16:1–2 — “Upon the first day of the week... let every one of you lay by him in store...”
  • 2 Corinthians 9:7 — “...God loveth a cheerful giver.”

Giving is not fundraising, selling, or coercion. It is the freewill, purposeful offering of Christians on every Lord’s day.

5. Lord’s Supper (Communion)

  • Acts 20:7 — “Upon the first day of the week… to break bread…”
  • 1 Corinthians 11:23–29 — Detailed instructions for proper observance.

The Lord’s Supper is a weekly memorial of Christ’s death—consisting of unleavened bread and fruit of the vine—partaken by the saints on every Sunday, not quarterly or annually.

Greek Exegesis: "Worship" (John 4:24)

Greek: προσκυνέω (proskuneō)

  • From pros (“toward”) and kuneō (“to kiss”) — means to bow in reverence, to express homage or adoration.
  • Always directed toward a superior, esp. God.

Remember:
Worship is not self-expression—it is God-centered reverence. The Greek structure makes clear that worship must be both spiritual in nature and anchored in truth. Either component missing results in vain worship (Matt. 15:9).

Full Scripture Cross-Referencing

  1. Matthew 15:8–9 — “In vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”
  2. Acts 2:42 — They continued “steadfastly” in apostolic worship.
  3. Hebrews 10:25 — “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together…”

Doctrinal Note:

Biblical worship must be authorized, consistent, and offered with reverence. Innovations such as clapping, praise dancing, drama, instruments, and emotion-driven performances are without divine authority.

Doctrinal Significance & Application

  • Worship is not optional—it is what the Father seeks (John 4:23).
  • We must not worship according to what pleases us, but according to what God has revealed.
  • Acceptable worship requires reverent spirit and scriptural truth.

Application Today:

The modern church is tempted to chase popularity by altering worship—adding bands, drama, emotionalism, or casual attitudes. But God has not changed. To worship in spirit and truth is to obey the revealed New Testament pattern—without subtraction or addition.

Refutation of False Doctrines

✘False View #1: Instrumental music is acceptable in worship.

📖 Refuted by: Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16; Heb. 13:15

✞Truth: The New Testament authorizes only singing—from the heart. Instruments are foreign to apostolic worship.

✘False View #2: We may take the Lord’s Supper monthly or quarterly.

📖 Refuted by: Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 11:26

✞Truth: Early Christians partook weekly, every first day of the week.

✘False View #3: Worship should be exciting, innovative, and culturally engaging.

📖 Refuted by: Matt. 15:9; John 4:24

✞Truth: Worship must be in truth, not according to culture or carnal appeal.

Conclusion and Exhortation

God is not worshiped by accident, convenience, or entertainment. He is worshiped when His people come before Him in humility, obeying the pattern revealed in His Word. To alter worship is to insult His holiness. To preserve it is to honor His will.

Exhortation:
Let us be the true worshippers the Father is seeking. Let us cast out the innovations of men and return to the pure, reverent, joyful, biblical worship of the New Testament church. Worship is not about us—it is all about Him.

“Let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.”
— Hebrews 12:28 (KJV)

Aralin 6: Ang Pagsamba ng Iglesia

Pangunahing Talata: Juan 4:23–24

  • 1 Tesalonica 5:17 — “Manalangin kayong walang patid.”

3. Pangangaral at Pagtuturo

Griyego: προσκυνέω (proskuneō)

Mahalagang Aral at Aplikasyon

Konklusyon at Panawagan

Believe That Ye Receive Them, And Ye Shall Have Them.

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog " Believe That Ye Receive Them, And Ye Shall Have Them. " Text: Mark 11:24 Introduction This Bible sermon explains the true meaning of Mark 11:24 , where Jesus teaches about believing prayer. Many misunderstand this verse as a promise that God will grant any request, but Scripture shows that prayer must be made in Christ’s name, according to His will, and from a life of obedience . Learn what the Bible really teaches about faithful prayer. Brethren and friends, listen carefully to the words of our Lord Jesus Christ in Mark 11:24 : “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” This verse is powerful. It is encouraging. It strengthens our faith in prayer. But it is also one of the most misunderstood verses in the Bible today. Many people read this passage and think that Jesus is giving believers a blank check — that whatever we desire, God ...

“For Now I Know” — God’s Response to Faith With Works

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog Sermon: “ For Now I Know ” — God’s Response To Faith With Works Text: Genesis 22:12 God’s Words Are For Us, Not For Him Brethren, when we read, “for now I know that thou fearest God,” we must remember that God did not write the Scriptures for Himself—He wrote them for us (Romans 15:4; 2 Timothy 3:16). The Lord has always been all-knowing (Psalm 139:1–4; Isaiah 46:10). He knew Abraham’s heart before Abraham even moved. But God chose to phrase it this way—“for now I know”—to communicate something to us. It is not that God gained new knowledge, but that He demonstrated in a way we can understand that true faith is proven by obedience.   Faith Is Only Real When It Acts Notice, brethren, Abraham was already a man of faith before Genesis 22. Hebrews 11:8 says he obeyed when he was called to go out. But here, his faith reached its highest test—offering Isaac, his only son. Faith alone in the mind would not have satisfied God. James ...

The Deity of Christ — Lecture 1

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog ⟵ Previous Next ⟶ The Foundational Thesis — Why the Deity of Christ Is Central to Salvation and Doctrine THE DEITY OF CHRIST  — LECTURE 1   Introduction: The Question That Determines Everything There is no question more critical in all of Scripture than this: Who is Jesus Christ? Not merely what men say, not what traditions teach, but what the Word of God declares. For upon this question rests the foundation of salvation, the authority of doctrine, and the very identity of God as revealed to man. In Matthew 16:15, Jesus asked His disciples, “But whom say ye that I am?” This was not a casual inquiry—it was a dividing line between truth and error, life and condemnation. The answer given by Peter, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16), becomes the cornerstone of true faith. Yet Scripture does not leave this confession undefined. The Bible itself explains what...

IS CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION PLEASING TO GOD?

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog IS CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION PLEASING TO GOD? A Doctrinal Examination by Scripture Alone 📖 WHAT DOES “Pleasing to God” MEAN? To ask whether Christmas celebration is pleasing to God is not a cultural question but a doctrinal one . Scripture defines what pleases God—not human sentiment, tradition, emotion, or majority practice. “ But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him .”   (Hebrews 11:6) What pleases God is: ·      Faith grounded in His revealed will ·      Obedience to His commands ·      Worship offered according to His authority “ Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. ”   (2 John 9) ☛ Thus, anything done “for God” but without His authorization is not pleasing—no matter how sincere . ✎ Key Questio...

In Luke 16, our Lord Jesus pulls back the curtain of the unseen world to show us a rich man who lived for himself and a beggar named Lazarus who suffered in life but was carried by angels into Abraham’s bosom. The rich man, now in anguish, lifts up his eyes and pleads for his brothers who are still alive. “Send Lazarus,” he begs, “that he may warn them.” But Abraham’s answer pierces like thunder: “They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.” Oh brethren, hear that line again — let them hear them. Main Text: Matthew 16:18 “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Beloved, my friend… allow me to speak to you not as an enemy, but as one who cares for your soul. I am not here to attack you. I am not here to argue with you. I am here to ask you something—something simple, yet something that may change everything about your life, your faith, and your eternity. My friend… what church are you a member of? Have you ever truly asked yourself that question—not just by name, but by truth? Who built that church you belong to? When did it begin? Was it established in the days of the apostles… or was it started by a man many years later? And more importantly… can you find that church in the New Testament? Pause for a moment. Think carefully.
