The Watchman’s Burden

Text: Ezekiel 3:17–19

The Watchman’s Burden

Brethren, and dear friends who may be seeking the truth — the Lord spoke to Ezekiel and said:

"Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.

When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.

Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.” (Ezek. 3:17–19)

This is not just Ezekiel’s story. This is a warning to all of us who know God’s word. We are watchmen. And with that role comes a burden — a burden of souls.

God’s Calling Is Personal

The Lord said, “I have made thee a watchman.” Brethren, notice — it was God who made him a watchman. Ezekiel did not volunteer for a title. He was appointed by the Almighty. In the Hebrew, the word for “watchman” (צָפָה – tsaphah) means one who looks out, who keeps vigil, who stays alert. A watchman cannot afford to be sleepy. He cannot be distracted. He cannot be silent when danger approaches.

If you are a Christian today, the Lord has placed you in that role — not in a ceremonial sense, but as a real spiritual sentinel. We have been given the charge to guard not walls of stone, but souls that are eternal. And God expects us to be alert to sin’s approach and to warn with His word.

Silence Is Not Innocence

God told Ezekiel that if he saw the wicked man in danger and failed to warn him, that man would still die in his sin — but his blood would be required at the watchman’s hand. Brethren, that means silence is not neutral. Silence is deadly. When we know someone is walking toward destruction and we keep our mouths shut because we fear their reaction, or because it is “awkward,” God says, “His blood will I require at thine hand.”

Think of Paul’s words in Acts 20:26–27: “I am pure from the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.” Paul could say that because he warned, he taught, he pleaded. He did not withhold the truth to protect himself.

The Danger of Delayed Warnings

Brethren, danger does not always come with sirens. Sometimes it comes quietly — a false doctrine that sounds loving, a sin that seems small, a neglect of God’s assembly that becomes a habit. If we see it creeping in someone’s life and we wait, thinking, “I’ll talk to them later,” we may find that later never comes. Proverbs 27:6 says, “Faithful are the wounds of a friend.” It may hurt them to hear our warning, but it will save them far more than flattery ever could.

Our Duty Is to Speak, Not to Force

The Lord told Ezekiel: if you warn the wicked and they refuse to turn, they will die in their sin — but thou hast delivered thy soul. Brethren, our responsibility is to speak the truth in love (Eph. 4:15). We cannot make someone obey. But we can make sure we are not guilty of withholding the message that could save them.

Sometimes we fear that warning others will make them hate us. But if we truly love them, we will risk their anger to save their soul. Better to have them upset now and repent later, than to have them smile at us now and curse us in eternity.

The Blood on Our Hands

This passage is graphic — God uses the image of blood on the hands. Brethren, picture standing before the Lord on judgment day, and He shows us faces — people we knew, people we loved — and He says, “You never warned them.” The guilt will not just be theirs. It will be ours too.

But imagine the joy if the Lord shows us people who say, “You spoke to me, and I obeyed. I am here because you cared enough to warn me.” That is the reward of a faithful watchman.

The Watchman’s Call to You

Friend, if you are not yet in Christ, this sermon is my warning to you. The wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23). You are in danger — not of missing out on church life, but of eternal separation from God in hell. And God’s warning is clear: repent, turn from your sin, obey the gospel.

The gospel is not just “believe in Jesus” — it is believe, repent of sins (Acts 17:30), confess Christ as Lord (Rom. 10:9–10), and be baptized for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38; 22:16). That is the only way to be saved and added by the Lord to His church (Acts 2:47).

And brethren, if you are already in Christ but have been silent, afraid, or indifferent to warning the lost — repent. Return to your post as a watchman. Speak up. Pray for courage. Souls are at stake.

Final Plea

Brethren, the night is far spent. The trumpet must sound. Danger is real. Eternity is near. God has made us watchmen, not spectators. If we keep silent, we will be held accountable. But if we warn faithfully, even if the world rejects us, our Lord will say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

Today, you have heard the warning. If you are cut to the heart like those in Acts 2:37, do not delay. Ask, “What shall I do?” — and then obey what God has already answered in His word. For tomorrow is not promised.

Come now — while the door of mercy is still open.

Ang Pasanin ng Bantay

Teksto: Ezekiel 3:17–19

The Origin and Error of “Once Saved, Always Saved” (OSAS): A Biblical Exposé

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog The Origin and Error of “Once Saved, Always Saved” (OSAS) A Biblical Exposé An Authoritative Study Using the King James Bible Introduction: A Question of Eternal Security The doctrine of Once Saved, Always Saved (OSAS) asserts that once a person is saved, they can never lose their salvation, regardless of future behavior, apostasy, or rebellion. It is often linked with the phrase “eternal security” in Protestant theology. This study examines the origin, evaluates the biblical claims, and provides a full refutation using only the Scripture as the final and only authority. I. Historical Roots of OSAS (A Brief Context) Though many today assume OSAS to be an apostolic doctrine, its systematized form arose from John Calvin's doctrine of Perseverance of the Saints (TULIP), later popularized by Baptist theologians like Charles Stanley and modern evangelical churches. However, early church fathers such as Tertullian, Orige...

The Promise and Importance of Christ’s Church

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog     Next ⟶ The Promise and Importance of Christ’s Church "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." — Matthew 16:18 (KJV) Introduction The Church of Christ is not a product of human invention or denominational evolution. It is the fulfillment of a divine promise — a structure built not by human hands, but by the Lord Himself. In a time when religious confusion is widespread and thousands of conflicting churches exist, we must return to the simple, authoritative statement of Jesus: “I will build my church.” (Matt. 16:18) These words mark the beginning of a divine blueprint. This was not a vague intention, nor a mystical concept. Jesus was referring to a real, identifiable, and traceable body of people — the church — that He Himself would build, own, and preserve. “I Will Build My Church” — A Divine...

Restoration Movement: The Illusion of Rebuilding What God Preserved

English 🇵🇭 Tagalog There Is Nothing to Restore — Just Preach the Gospel A Doctrinal Exposition Affirming the Ongoing Existence and Perfection of God’s Church Introduction In recent centuries, many sincere believers have spoken of a "restoration movement"—the idea that the true church was lost to history and must now be recovered or re-established. But is this concept biblical? Does Scripture ever indicate that the church built by Christ (Matthew 16:18) would vanish, become corrupted, and need a future restoration? The answer, as revealed in the inspired Word of God, is  no . What God  planned before the foundation of the world  (Ephesians 3:9–11), what Christ  purchased with His own blood  (Acts 20:28), and what was  established in power on Pentecost  (Acts 2),  continues to exist today . While men may depart from the truth, the truth remains. And what we are called to do is not to restore, but to  pre...

To many, it appears to be an afterthought, a temporary institution until Christ returns, or merely a human denomination among many. But the Scriptures teach otherwise. The church was not an accident. It was not a substitute for a failed plan. It was not an invention of man. It was part of God's eternal purpose , rooted i...
