For some, this passage is dismissed as an artifact of ancient Corinthian culture. For others, it is embraced but with little understanding of its depth and significance. And for still others, it is a source of contention, avoided in preaching and practice because it seems “too controversial.” Yet the inspired Word leaves us no room to treat this as an optional matter.
